It’s January, and everyone seems to be on the health kick hype. Getting fit is one of the most common New Years’ resolutions every year. We join the gym, order some protein power and start a new fitness journey. We promise never to eat fast food again and shame ourselves for gaining a few extra pounds over Christmas.

Many of our health-related resolutions are unsustainable in the long run. Of course, you will crave fast food and miss a workout from time to time. The key is to make realistic and sustainable goals that you can actually achieve. Your health journey is not just for January – it’s your entire life. You need to find a healthy lifestyle that works for your schedule, responsibilities and personality.

Here are a few tips to achieve your health and fitness goals this year.

Find a form of exercise you enjoy

You need to try a few different forms of exercise to find the one that brings you joy. You might hate running, spinning, boxing and swimming – but weightlifting might make you feel strong and empowered. Or, you might prefer exercising outdoors – instead of in a crowded gym. It’s much easier to wake up for a workout when you enjoy it.

Find a schedule that works for you

Your exercise regime needs to fit in around work, kids and social commitments. You don’t need to work out at 6 am to be fit. You could work out at 3pm, 8pm, or even 1am if that works for you. Look at your calendar at the start of each week and block out some time for your workout.

Try cooking new foods

Healthy food can be just as delicious as McDonald’s. Buy a few new cookbooks and start with some easier meals, to begin with. You need quick and easy meals that you can prepare ahead of time. If you finish work late, you can grab a portion from the freezer and stay on track with your diet. A healthy lifestyle is all about preparation and organisation.

Get your family involved

Get outside and squeeze in your 10,000 steps every day. Instead of eating junk and watching movies all day, you could go on a family walk at the weekend. Or, you could catch a train to York and explore a new area together. Fitness doesn’t have to be boring or lonely. It’s about doing small activities every day.
